| Con Sheehan Boxed his way his first senior heavy weight title in Dublin on Saturday the 12th of January. Sheehan had to box in tough conditions all week fighting four times winning all four. In the Preliminary round he boxed Patrick Phelan of St Michaels (Athy) who he beat 19-8. In the 1/4 finals Con boxed John Sweeney (Dungloe) who he beat 14- 7. In the semi finals Con produced a master class of boxing to see off William Byrne of Knocknagoshel 17 -2. On Saturday night in the live televised bout, in the Battle of the Sheehans, Con boxed Tommy Sheehan from St Michaels (Athy) and this turned out to be a very tough fight. With Con trailing by 3-0 after the first round, he upped the tempo for the remaining 3 rounds and didn’t concede a further point for in remaining rounds winning the bout 6-3. This was not the end of the accolades that Con received on the night as he was awarded Boxer of the tournament for his performances over the four days.
Also in action in the senior championships, was Kevin Fennessy. Kevin won his 1/4 final bout against Sean Kilroy of St Matthews on a score line of 13- 6. In his semi final bout he skilfully disposed of Carl Frampton of the Midland White City boxing club by 13-7. Kevin Boxed very well in the final but came up against the very strong David Oliver Joyce who has never been beaten in an All Ireland final. Despite boxing excellently in the first round somehow Fennessy found himself scoreless and the scoring for the rest of the fight seemed to go the same way, at the end of the fight Fennessy found himself on the wrong end of a 22-4 scoreline.
